JON MAY'S SUCCESSFUL RETURN

Jonathan May, of DML Woolwell club, successfully returned to the table tennis tournament scene in August after a ten year absence, when he played in the City of Liverpool Grand Prix. In the Band 6 event, he easily won his group, and only dropped one set as he cruised to the final. There he lost to Ian Black of Middlesex (also making a comeback after 10 years) in a closely fought four sets.
In the band 5 event, it was a similar story to Band 6 where he was only marginally troubled in the semi-finals by Gary Watson of Cheshire, who had earlier won his group by beating Ian Black. Ian, however, as runner up in his group, again progressed to the final. This time it was Jonathan who triumphed. After both players had taken a set each, he took a closely fought third 14-12, before easily winning the fourth to clinch the title.

Jonathan then followed up his successful Saturday by winning his group in the main event where he beat Mike Johns of Cheshire (a top 100 player), before losing to the highly rated Martin Rogers of Nottingham.

Sister Liz May won her group in the Ladies band 1 event when she beat the seeded Gemma Lloyd of Cheshire in three straight games, the higher ranked Laura Hall of Somerset in five, and Sabrina Conway of Ireland.  She then beat the higher ranked Kim Mudge of Surrey 3-1, before losing to the third seed, Naomi Wilson of Somerset 3-1 in the quarter finals.

On the Sunday, in her ladies open group, Liz lost to number two seed Natalie Bawden of Essex, but beat both Caroline Hallows of Cheshire and Lisa Rowley of Staffordshire, to progress to the later rounds. There she lost to DML Woolwell's Women's British League new signing, Lindsey Thornton Reynolds 3-1, after taking the first set.
